As part of NCABL’s Off the Record Series, which features NCABL members serving in elected office, we are proud to highlight Senator Dan Blue, a distinguished leader in the North Carolina General Assembly and a trailblazer in our state’s political and legal history.
Senator Blue represents Wake County in the North Carolina Senate, where he has served since 2009 following decades of prior service in the North Carolina House of Representatives. His legislative career spans more than forty years, making him one of the most experienced and influential voices in North Carolina government.
A native of Lumberton, North Carolina, Senator Blue earned his undergraduate degree from North Carolina Central University and his Juris Doctor from Duke University School of Law. He established a law practice in Raleigh and has built a career that reflects both legal excellence and a deep commitment to public service.
Senator Blue made history as the first African American Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives, serving from 1991 to 1995. In that role, he helped shape legislative priorities during a critical period in the state’s development and demonstrated the power of coalition-building and principled leadership. He later went on to serve as President of the National Conference of State Legislatures, extending his influence to the national stage and contributing to broader conversations on effective governance.
Throughout his tenure, Senator Blue has been a consistent advocate for education, economic development, healthcare access, and civil rights. His work has helped advance policies that strengthen public education systems, expand economic opportunity, and promote more equitable outcomes for communities across North Carolina. As Senate Democratic Leader, he continues to play a central role in shaping legislative strategy and guiding policy discussions at the highest levels of state government.
Beyond his legislative accomplishments, Senator Blue has demonstrated impactful leadership in higher education and civic institutions. He served on the Duke University Board of Trustees and made history as the first African American to chair the Board, helping guide one of the nation’s leading universities. He is also widely respected for mentoring the next generation of attorneys and public servants and for his ongoing contributions to civic and professional organizations across the state.
Senator Blue’s career is defined by historic achievement, sustained leadership, and a lasting impact on both law and public policy. He exemplifies the mission of NCABL by leveraging his legal training and elected office to expand opportunity, strengthen communities, and help shape a more just and equitable North Carolina.
We are proud to highlight his service and celebrate the meaningful contributions NCABL members are making in elected office across our state.
