As part of NCABL’s Off the Record Series, which features NCABL members serving in elected office, we are proud to highlight Martin Moore, District Attorney-Elect for Buncombe County.

Buncombe County Commissioner Martin Moore made history after winning the March 3 primary, positioning him to become the first African American District Attorney in Buncombe County’s history. This milestone reflects both his leadership and the continued progress of our profession across North Carolina.
A seasoned attorney and public servant, Moore brings a broad and thoughtful perspective to his upcoming role as chief prosecutor. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Philosophy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina School of Law.
His professional experience includes service as a public defender, as well as work in private practice as an attorney and mediator, handling matters across civil, criminal, and appellate courts. His career reflects a deep commitment to fairness, due process, and advocacy for individuals at every stage of the justice system.
In addition to his legal work, Moore was elected to the Buncombe County Commission in 2022, where he championed initiatives focused on affordable housing, education, and community-centered public safety. His experience in local government provides him with a strong foundation for understanding how policy, community needs, and the justice system intersect.
As he prepares to assume office, Moore has articulated a vision that prioritizes both public safety and smart, fair prosecution. He has emphasized focusing resources on serious offenses such as gun violence and domestic violence, while also supporting diversion programs, treatment courts, and mental health initiatives that address the root causes of crime.
His leadership reflects a modern, balanced approach to prosecution—one that recognizes accountability while also seeking to reduce recidivism and strengthen community outcomes.
District Attorney-Elect Moore’s achievement is both historic and forward-looking. His career reflects a commitment to expanding access to justice, addressing systemic challenges, and building a criminal justice system that is both effective and equitable.
We are proud to highlight his service and celebrate the meaningful contributions NCABL members are making in elected office across North Carolina.
