The North Carolina Association of Black Lawyers extends its sincere appreciation to all who participated in and supported the Peter H. Bell Commemoration, a meaningful tribute to a legal pioneer whose legacy continues to shape our profession.

We offer special thanks to our member Attorney James E. Williams Jr. for his leadership vision and dedication in organizing this impactful program. We also extend our deep gratitude to The Honorable Regina Parker, Superior Court Judge of the Second Judicial District for her powerful and inspiring remarks.

We were especially honored to hear from Attorney Charlene Richardson, granddaughter of Peter H. Bell, whose presence reflected the living legacy of his work and the generational impact of his example. It was also my privilege to offer remarks on behalf of NCABL as we joined the community in recognizing this historic milestone.

As reflected in the attached excerpt from Judge Parker’s speech, “Legacy is not measured only in personal achievement. It is measured in who rises because you stood.” Her words captured the essence of why this commemoration mattered.

Excerpt from the Peter H. Bell Speech

Legacy is not measured only in personal achievement. It is measured in who rises because you stood. Peter Bell’s life and example of excellence stirred something in his own sons.  They followed in his footsteps and became distinguished attorneys themselves-continuing the work of advocacy and service. Leaving a great legacy is more than creating a path for others to follow; it is living your life in such a way that they want to follow.

So, the first says, “It is possible.” And once something is proven possible others can catch the vision. I’m sure he didn’t see himself as planting seeds of hope for future generations, but that’s what he did.  He persevered and planted seeds-seeds of courage, education, professionalism, and service. And seeds, when faithfully planted, will produce a harvest.

‘

There is a powerful truth we MUST carry forward from Mr. Bell’s life. Our pursuit of opportunity is never just personal.  It is never meant for only you. When we study, when we prepare, when we strive for excellence, when we approach everything, we do with integrity-we are not only lifting ourselves. We are lifting standards. We are lifting expectations, and we are opening doors.

‘

Some of us may never be “the first” in a historical sense. But all of us will face moments where we must choose courage over comfort. Moments where perseverance is required. Moments where we are tempted to give up. In those moments, when life gets hard, we must remember great men like Peter Bell, where quit was not in his vocabulary. I believe he had a vision beyond his singular achievements and understood the bigger picture of sacrifice and service. May we remember that sometimes the breakthrough you are pursuing is not just for you. It is for the children watching.  It is for the colleague who follows.  It is for the generation coming behind you.

In closing, Mr. Bell’s life reminds us that true courage is not about recognition-it is about responsibility. Responsibility to prepare, responsibility to persevere, and responsibility to leave something better than you found it. Because sometimes the opportunity before you is not simply a door.  It is a doorway for others. And when history looks back, may it say of us what I can say of Peter H. Bell:

He walked forward with courage so that others could run.

He endured with perseverance so that others could stand with boldness. And because he did, others like me could follow.

There is an old African American spiritual that says-

May the life I live speak for me

May the life I live speak for me

When I get to the end of my journey

May the life I live speak for me

Today Mr. Bell’s well-lived life speaks loudly of legacy, character, service and sacrifice.  May we all live a life that encourages and inspires others with our walk, our talk and our actions, and may we live a life that others want to follow.

Attorney Peter H. Bell’s life stands as proof that when one person demonstrates courage and excellence, they expand what is possible for others. As we were reminded, “Our pursuit of opportunity is never just personal. It is never meant for only you.” His journey was not simply about becoming the first Black lawyer in Plymouth in Washington County. It was about planting seeds of courage, education, professionalism and service that would produce a harvest for generations to come.

This commemoration was important because it grounded us in that truth. It reminded us that the legal profession has been shaped by individuals who chose perseverance over comfort and purpose over limitation. At a time when access to the profession was restricted, Peter H. Bell’s presence in the courtroom was itself an act of courage and a declaration of possibility.

The program brought together members of the bench bar and community to reflect on that legacy and its continued relevance today. It served not only as a tribute but as a call to action for all of us to lead with integrity to mentor intentionally and to remain committed to service.

As we reflect on this occasion, we are reminded that the work we do today will shape the opportunities of tomorrow. Like Peter H. Bell, we are called not only to walk through doors but to hold them open for others.

“He walked forward with courage so that others could run. He endured with perseverance so that others could stand with boldness.”
