North Carolina Association of Black Lawyers (NCABL) Stands Firm Against Efforts to Disenfranchise North Carolina Voters
Raleigh, North Carolina, January 24, 2025 – The North Carolina Association of Black Lawyers (NCABL) expresses grave concern and strong opposition to recent efforts by North Carolina Supreme Court judicial candidate Jefferson Griffin to challenge the ballots of over 60,000 absentee and early voters. These actions threaten to reverse the outcome of a clean and fair election, undermining the democratic process and the fundamental principle that every vote counts.
Voting is the cornerstone of democracy. Judge Griffin’s attempt to judicially disqualify more than 60,000 lawfully cast ballots is a profoundly unjust measure that disproportionately impacts communities of color, exacerbating existing societal inequities. Such actions strike at the heart of public confidence in our electoral system and set a dangerous precedent that risks eroding trust in the democratic process for generations to come.
Following a lawfully requested recount, Justice Allison Riggs’ victory was affirmed with a 734-vote lead. The North Carolina State Board of Elections (State BOE) thoroughly reviewed and rejected Judge Griffin’s challenges on their merits. Despite this, Judge Griffin has sought judicial intervention from the very court to which he seeks election, attempting to prevent the State BOE from certifying the results. This lawsuit, widely regarded by legal professionals across the political spectrum as baseless, represents a thinly veiled effort to subvert the will of North Carolina voters.
The implications of this legal challenge are profound. Democracy demands that voters have confidence their ballots will be counted. Undermining this principle jeopardizes the foundation of democratic governance and threatens to diminish public trust in the electoral process to levels not seen in a century. Such actions are an affront to justice and the democratic values we hold dear.
The North Carolina Association of Black Lawyers stands resolutely against voter suppression in any form. We are committed to ensuring that North Carolina remains a state where every eligible voice is heard and counted. We call on all North Carolinians to reject Judge Griffin’s meritless and self-serving attempts to undermine democracy.
We, the members of the NCABL, remain steadfast in our mission to stand in the gap for the oppressed, ostracized, and voiceless. We will organize, strategize, and fight onward with courage and conviction to ensure justice prevails.
Respectfully,
Kimberly A. Moore
President
