NCABL is pleased to share information about the 20th Annual Romallus O. Murphy CLE Seminar, taking place on Friday, September 25, 2026, from 9:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in High Point. The program will be offered in a hybrid format, with both in-person and virtual attendance available.

Honoring the Legacy of Romallus O. Murphy

For twenty years, this CLE has honored the legacy of Romallus O. Murphy, a pioneering North Carolina attorney and longtime civil rights advocate who devoted much of his legal career to advancing equality and protecting the rights of African Americans. A 1956 graduate of the UNC School of Law, Murphy became deeply involved in civil rights litigation and served for decades in leadership with the North Carolina NAACP, including its Legal Redress Committee. His legal work included challenges involving voting rights, electoral representation, and racial discrimination. His career exemplified the important role lawyers can play in advancing justice and protecting constitutional rights.

That legacy remains particularly relevant today. This year’s seminar will bring together legal scholars, litigators, and advocates to examine critical civil and political rights issues affecting minority and underserved communities across North Carolina.

The 2026 program will feature five workshops:

  • Veterans’ Rights and Protection
  • Developments in Police Misconduct Claims
  • Artificial Intelligence and Technology Concerns That Impact Civil Rights Organizations
  • Protecting Voters’ Rights and Participation
  • Estate Preparation and Administration

Presenters include faculty from the North Carolina Central University School of Law and attorneys and advocates working directly in these areas. We are especially pleased that longtime NCABL member and NCCU School of Law Professor Irving Joyner will provide opening and closing remarks for this year’s program.
